Persian-born Merwan Sheriar Irani became known as Meher Baba, meaning “Compassionate Father,” because of his spiritual teachings. Though he chose to observe silence for nearly 44 years of his life, that didn’t stop Meher Baba from communicating about spirituality with his friends and followers through an alphabet board and elaborate hand gestures.
Through a seven-year spiritual journey with the help of a “perfect master,” Baba believed his true identity was that of the avatar (periodic incarnation of God in human form) of his time.

“The religion that I shall give teaches the Knowledge of the One behind the many. The book that I shall make people read is the book of the heart that holds the key to the mystery of life. I shall bring about a happy blending of the head and the heart. I shall revitalize all religions and cults, and bring them together like beads on one string.” - God Speaks, 1955

“Philosophers, atheists and others may affirm or refute the existence of God. But as long as they do not deny their very existence they continue to testify their belief in God.” - Los Angeles Times interview, 1956
“Consciously or unconsciously, every living creature seeks one thing… The object of the quest is called by many names — happiness, peace, freedom, truth, love, perfection, Self-realization, Godrealization, union with God. Essentially it is a search for all of these, but in a special way.” - Meher Baba Journal, vol. 1, no. 1, 1938
